Emphasize Your Accomplishments, Be sure to include your key accomplishments on your resume. Did you do something that saved a previous employer money? Did you find a way to do something in less time without sacrificing quality? Did you personally show your co-worker(s) how to do something? If you have done any of these things write them down on your resume. Let the employer know what you have done in the past and they will have a much better idea of what you will be able to do for them!
I want functional resume samples so I can write resumes that get me in for the interview'. Nothing wrong with that statement. The trouble is that for many of us, a cursory glance over some functional resume samples that have proven to work may still not convince us that there's anything wrong with the resume we always like to write. We are the worst possible people to vet our own resume, as we lived that job history and we can only ever read our work subjectively. The hard-pressed HR person at the other end of your resume's journey will see just words on a page, and maybe an embarrassing passport photo attached.
How Should You Use Those Free Resume Samples? You don't need to be afraid of the free resume samples that you might find on the internet. Check them out, by all means. But instead of copying text verbatim, put those samples to better use by studying the different formats (the style and structure of the resume, including the breakdown of categories) and the content – with respect to the way the author chose to phrase responsibilities, accomplishments, etc. Use resume samples as a source from which to glean ideas, and as an opportunity to immerse yourself in the language of the craft. Take the lessons learned from studying those samples, and apply those lessons with originality toward the crafting of your own document. By avoiding the look-alike text that every Tom, Dick and Harry has glommed onto, you're more likely to build a professional tribute to an actual individual, and subsequently attract the eye of a hiring official. And that's the goal.
The resume should be designed so that the most important information can be obtained with only a cursory scan. This is usually all the effort that your resume will initially receive. Only the most important information should be presented in your resume and it should be devoid of excessive verbiage. This makes it easier for the reader to obtain and remember the pertinent information. Work experience that is not related to the educational field should be summarized. This shows depth and breadth in your subject area. However, it should not be the main thrust. Your teaching and training experience should be the focus of your resume. You should also be sure to indicate your educational achievements including all honors and awards you have received. A teaching resume should be designed to reflect that you are well-established in your field and that you have the background and teaching experience that they may require. The purpose of the resume is to get your foot in the academic door. Thus, it is important that the resume be properly designed.
Dare to Be Unique – You may increase your chance of getting hired and reduce the risk of being rejected. There are new styles that you can use depending on the industry or position you desire. Usually printed in black ink, resumes now come in a variety of colors, formats, and sizes. Ever seen one that is folded like a brochure or leaflet? You might think it wouldn't be possible. But aside from this interesting idea, it is more likely to catch the attention of employers. Folding in leaflet style is usually done by those who are applying in the marketing or advertising industry. If you are applying as a graphic designer, you can present one in comic layout. It's very unique, right? But the important details must still be there. How about as a copywriter? You can make use of a font that looks like it has been typed from a typewriter.
Match & Map Your Skills To Their Needs, Always match your skills to the needs of the job you are applying for. If their job requires customer service skills, be sure you have that skill and list it on your resume. If you do not have a skill the employer is looking for then try to map the skills you do have to the one they desire. For example, if the employer wants someone experienced in Microsoft Word and you have not used Word then think about what you have used. Maybe you have used Word Perfect or Open Office Writer. If so, be sure to write this down! You can include it like this: Experienced in Open Office Writer (very similar to Microsoft Word). If you follow the good resume samples above, you will do a much better job of showing how qualified you are. Remember, this is the whole point of your resume: to get the employer's attention and show them you are a great fit for their needs. If you do this you should be granted an interview.
The second way resume examples can help is by providing you with a list of words and skills the employer is actively searching for. This might be as simple as adding a few words to your skills area or it could be as difficult as going into detail about every skill you have done in your career. Resume examples will show you just what kind of information is needed and the format it is needed in. The third way resume examples can help is providing you a look at a different person's resume and using it to better your own. Many times you don't have the money to go out and buy a resume writing book instead using resume examples is a quicker and cheaper resource for finding out how to better your own resume.
